Air Purifier for Wildfire Season: What You Need Before Smoke Arrives
Why Wildfire Smoke Is Different From Normal Indoor Pollution
Wildfire smoke is dominated by PM2.5 — particles under 2.5 microns. These fine particles penetrate deeper into the lungs than typical household dust and stay airborne much longer. They carry carcinogenic compounds from burned structures and vegetation.
During a wildfire event, outdoor PM2.5 can reach 200-500+ micrograms per cubic meter (AQI 200-500). An unsealed house loses roughly 50-70% of its outdoor air quality protection — if outdoor PM2.5 is 150, indoor will reach 75-105 without filtration. With a properly sized air purifier and sealed building, you can bring indoor PM2.5 down to 20-35 even when outdoor levels are severe.
The Three-Part Wildfire Strategy
**1. Seal the building**: Close all windows and doors. Seal obvious gaps with towels at door bases if smoke infiltration is heavy. Set HVAC to recirculate (not fresh air draw). Turn off exhaust fans (kitchen, bathroom) to prevent drawing outdoor smoke inside.
**2. Upgrade HVAC filter to MERV 13**: If you have central HVAC, replace the filter with MERV 13 or MERV 16 before wildfire season. MERV 13 captures 85%+ of PM2.5. Most residential HVAC systems built after 2010 can handle MERV 13 without significant airflow reduction — check your unit's specifications. Run the fan continuously (not just when heating/cooling) to filter recirculating air.
**3. Run portable HEPA purifiers**: One unit per occupied room. A 300 sq ft living room needs at least 200 CADR (targeting 5-6 ACH for wildfire conditions). 5 ACH is the EPA's recommended air change rate for smoke events.
Sizing for Wildfire Conditions
Standard sizing guidance assumes 2 ACH. For wildfire smoke, target 5-6 ACH. This means your purifier CADR should be roughly double what the manufacturer recommends for "room coverage."
Formula for 5 ACH: CADR needed = (room sq ft × ceiling height × 5) ÷ 60
For a 200 sq ft room with 8 ft ceilings: (200 × 8 × 5) ÷ 60 = 133 CADR minimum. For a 400 sq ft room: 267 CADR minimum.
Recommended Units for Wildfire Prep
**Coway Airmega 400 ($350-450)**: CADR 350. Handles a 280 sq ft room at 5 ACH. Dual-sided intake captures smoke coming from any direction. Solid auto mode with a laser particle sensor. This is the unit you want in your main living space.
**Levoit Core 600S ($180-220)**: CADR 410. The highest CADR per dollar in this tier. Handles a 330 sq ft room at 5 ACH. Good for large living rooms. Smart features help during events when you want to monitor air quality remotely.
**Winix 5500-2 ($150-200)**: CADR 360. Covers a 290 sq ft room at 5 ACH. Disable PlasmaWave mode during smoke events — ionizers react with smoke compounds. With PlasmaWave off, this is an excellent wildfire-season unit.
The Corsi-Rosenthal Box: Emergency Backup
During extended smoke events or if you run out of HEPA filter stock, a DIY Corsi-Rosenthal box provides real protection:
- 4 MERV 13 furnace filters arranged in a cube, taped together
- 1 box fan (20 inch fits most MERV 13 filters)
- Tape to seal the gaps
Cost: $60-90 for filters + a $20-30 fan if you do not already own one. CADR equivalent: approximately 400-600 depending on fan speed. Instructions widely available from the CDC and numerous university sources.
This is not a replacement for a real air purifier for year-round use, but as emergency capacity during wildfire events when store shelves empty and purifiers are sold out, it is a legitimate option.
Pre-Season Prep Checklist
Before wildfire season (spring for most Western US states):
- Buy or confirm you have HEPA purifiers for main bedroom and living room
- Stock 1-2 replacement HEPA filters per unit (they sell out during events)
- Buy MERV 13 HVAC filters and replace when smoke season starts
- Stock materials for a DIY Corsi-Rosenthal box
- Install AirNow or IQAir AirVisual app on your phone for real-time AQI alerts
- Identify any major gaps around windows or door frames and have weatherstripping ready
