What an Air Purifier Can and Cannot Do for Mold

This is the most important thing to get straight before you buy: an air purifier removes airborne mold spores. It does not kill mold growing on surfaces, stop the moisture source feeding it, or remove mycotoxins already deposited on walls and furniture. If you have a visible mold problem, the purifier is a mitigation tool while you address the underlying cause — not a fix for the mold itself.

With that said, capturing airborne mold spores matters. Mold spores range from 1-30 microns. Any H13 HEPA filter catches them. The secondary problem is musty odor: mold produces microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that smell musty long after the spore count in the air drops.
